Ripping DVDs for Apple TV
Ripping DVDs for Apple TV
In a couple of month I will be purchasing my Apple TV to stream music and movies to my living room TV. I have always kept my iTunes music pretty organized with album artwork. Lately I have been ripping my DVDs and adding them to my iTunes so when I do get my Apple TV I will have everything ready to start streaming. Since I have a 500 gig hard drive in my iMac I have plenty of space on my hard drive and I can rip and save my movies on my iMac in my iTunes. The program that I use to rip is called Handbrake; which is a free download. Here are some instructions to rip your DVDs.
1. Open the program and select “Source”.
2. Select the DVD
3. On the far right you can select the preset formats, if you do not see it then select “Toggle Presets”.
4. If you will be watching your DVDs on Apple TV, I suggest just selecting the Apple TV preset.
5. Next under “Destination” select where you want the file to rip to
6. Once you have everything ready push “Start” at the top
7. After its all done you can open up iTunes and add the file
The rip will take as long as the DVD is or how long the chapter is you selected. Remember if you have your iTunes library set to automatically organize when you add the file it will create a copy in your iTunes library folder. Therefore you are going to want to delete the original file. Once it is in your iTunes library you can edit the tags.
This was a short run through on how to rip a DVD for iTunes to stream to your Apple TV. If you need more information on this process of Handbrake, Google is your friend.
